About the Digital Smart Lab

The DSL Digital Exhibition opens the doors of the Digital Smart Lab at Wits University to visitors. The exhibition allows you to explore the projects that are being carried out at the Lab. Meet the people behind the work and visit their project websites for more information. The first collection of projects features eight engineering investigation projects led by our 2026 final-year engineering student cohort.

Digital Smart Lab

The Digital Smart Lab is based in the Wits School of Electrical and Information Engineering. Students and researchers develop and test engineering ideas through physical prototypes, software and digital models. The exhibition gives those projects a lasting home where visitors can return and follow their progress.

Wits–Bidvest Chair in Smart Solutions

Led by Professor Ling Cheng, the Chair brings university research into closer contact with industry challenges. Bidvest Services International supports the Chair through a commitment of approximately R6 million over three years. The partnership advances research and postgraduate development in telecommunications, artificial intelligence and smart technologies, with the aim of developing practical solutions for South Africa and the wider African continent.

Our vision

Our vision is a growing exhibition of projects from Wits University. Discover student projects, postgraduate research and student-led start-ups, meet the people behind them, and follow their progress as ideas become working technologies.
